Design Month in Ljubljana Kicks Off

The annual Month of Design kicked off in Ljubljana Monday evening with an award ceremony honouring the best of Slovenian design in the past year and lifetime achievements in design.

The award for design of the year went to Akrapovič, a company specialising in exhausts for motorcycles, for their Evolution Line (Titanium) for the Ducati 1199 Panigale.

Marjan Žitnik received the Timeless award for a battery torch, the model Z 14, that he designed in 1979 for the company Iskra.

The festival features 13 exhibitions in the "City of Design" a venue built of cardboard at an old print shop in Ljubljana that will showcase design through 6 November.

A display dubbed Muses shows how arts and antiquities can be placed in modern buildings, while the Identities #2 focuses on fashion design. Two exhibitions deal with food-related design.

Zmago Novak of Big, the institute organising Design Month, said that southeastern Europe needed a new centre of creativity and Ljubljana could be it.

Accordingly, the festival features an exhibition dedicated to design in the region, presenting more than 150 artists from 13 countries of SE Europe.
