Day of truth for Spain’s Prime Minister Rajoy

Spain's Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is due to speak in parliament on Thursday about allegations of illegal payments.

So far Rajoy has largely avoided discussing the scandal, but today he will face questions from politicians that he and his party received payments from big business in return for favourable treatment.

Rajoy was only implicated after handwritten ledger entries emerged alleging that payments had been made from an illegal slush fund to him and other senior politicians.

The ledgers were written by Luis Barcenas, the former party treasurer, who is now being held on remand after it was found that he had hidden more than 47 million euros in Swiss bank accounts.

He has told judges that he collected millions of euros in cash donations from construction magnates and distributed them to party leaders.

There is widespread belief that the whole political system is corrupt, infuriating the public during a time of economic hardship.
