Dalai Lama Starting Second Visit to Maribor

Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, the Tibetan spiritual leader, is arriving in Slovenia on Tuesday for his second visit to Maribor. A number of events are scheduled during his three-day visit as part of Maribor's stint as the European Capital of Culture, including a meeting of Nobel Peace Prize laureates on Thursday.

Along with the Dalai Lama, the three-day event "Maribor for Peace" will host Guatemalan human rights activist Rigoberta Menchu Tum, Bangladeshi economy expert Muhammad Yunus and Slovenian environmentalist Lučka Kajfež Bogataj. All the Nobel Prize laureates, who were invited to Maribor by Mayor Franc Kangler, will hold separate lectures on Wednesday, while a joint panel discussion on dialogue and solidarity in the global crisis will be organised on Thursday as one of the highlights of Maribor's stint as the European Capital of Culture. The Dalai Lama, who visited Maribor already in April 2010 and Ljubljana in July 2002, will make his first appearance on Wednesday with a lecture on "Cultivating Peace of Mind" and will also take part in a conference dubbed "Out of the Box", organised by the Maribor University parallel to the culture capital event. The only political representatives the Dalai Lama will meet are the Maribor mayor and Žiga Turk, the minister of education, science, culture and sport, who will take part in the international interdisciplinary conference "Out Of The Box 2012 - Innovative Ways for Improving the Culture of Living". As a preparation for the visit of the Tibetan spiritual leader, Days of Tibetan Culture are being held in Maribor between 10 and 18 May, with Tibetan monks from Dharamsala in India making sand mandalas and holding several lectures, concerts and meditations.
