Coalition to Discuss NLB, State Assets Holding

The coalition will meet on Wednesday to discuss efforts to shore up the NLB bank and the establishment of a single holding that would manage all state assets.

While New Slovenia (NSi) believes that NLB's non-performing loans should be transferred to a bad bank, the Pensioners' Party (DeSUS) would like to know the exact extent of NLB's bad portfolio before the final decision is made. DeSUS president Karl Erjavec noted on Monday that the state-run fund KAD, if it is to be part of the holding, should maintain a clear role of securing funds for the pension purse, whereas once the banking sector is shored-up, all of the holding's profit should go into the pension purse. According to Finance Minister Janez Šušteršič, the government is to discuss the bill on the Slovenia Sovereign Holding on Thursday so that the National Assembly can discuss it before the summer recess. Šušteršič is also scheduled to meet the opposition Social Democrats (SD) to discuss the introduction of the golden fiscal rule into the Constitution. While SD deputy group head Janko Veber did not want to forecast the outcome of the meeting, he said that his party's position on the issue was clear, and that no major changes were to be expected.
