Bilberry Liqueur Taking Over Foreign Markets

A bilberry liqueur made by a small Slovenian company has recently won the Spirits Business Master 2013 award for best liqueur given out by the London-based Spirit Business magazine.

The company, which is based in a small village near the town of Bled, offers only five different liqueurs, but is developing new flavours intended particularly for Asian markets.

Having upgraded its trademark this spring, MikeljSpirits now focuses almost exclusively on foreign markets, selling its products in several European countries as well as in Asia and Africa.

Company sales manager Jaka Dijak told the STA earlier this week that although there was a big interest in their products abroad, they had to make a lot of effort to educate potential buyers and introduce them to new flavours.

"But the feedback of those who taste our liqueurs is very good because our beverages have a natural flavour based on fruit brandy, which gives them a fine fragrance," he explained, adding that their spruce liqueur sparked a wave of enthusiasm in India a few weeks ago.

MikeljSpirits was established in 1995 and has only five employees.
