Beer&Flowers Festival in Laško Kicks Off in Jubilee Year

The north-eastern town of Laško, home to the eponymous brewery, will be hosting the 50th annual Beer&Flower Festival until Sunday. Apart from large quantities of beer, the "Slovenian Oktoberfest" will also feature cultural and music events

As usual, admission to concerts on all the stages is free except for the "Zlatorog" stage, which will feature popular ex-Yugoslav rock bands, such as Bajaga&Instruktori and Parni Valjak, as well as acclaimed Slovenian bands such as Šank rock, Dan D, DoT and Elvis Jackson.

Music lovers will also be able to enjoy concerts by US funk legend George Clinton, who will play with a 20-strong band on Saturday, and by acclaimed American guitarist Steve Stevens on Friday.

The festival is organised by Pivovarna Laško, Slovenia's oldest and biggest brewery. The president of the organising committee, Matej Oset, labelled this year's edition as "a phenomenal musical, cultural and social event".

The festival will include wind orchestra parades, a demonstration of old customs, the traditional Slovenian wedding ceremony, flower displays, sporting and children's events.

Since the festival is co-sponsored by the national railway company this year, festival-goers who have bought a concert ticket have also been given a coupon for a free return rail ticket to Laško from anywhere in the country.

Last year, the festival was attended by more than 100,000 people, who drank close to 300,000 pots of beer.
