A Bahrain judge jailed 20 doctors on Thursday for between five and 15 years in what critics say is revenge for their response to a deadly crackdown on protesters.
The medics were charged with a number of offences including trying to overthrow Bahrain's Sunni Muslim rulers, stealing medicine and forcibly occupying a hospital.
The unrest which began in March, saw 30 people killed and hundreds more injured.
More than 1000 people were detained in the crackdown.
The doctors said the charges were made-up to punish medical staff for treating people who took part in the demonstrations.
Following Thursday's verdicts, thousands of women joined a protest in a village west of the capital Manama.
They criticised what they see as harsh sentences given to protesters.
