The head of the Arab League has urged Syrian opposition groups to show more unity in their fight against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
Nabil Elarby was speaking to 250 members of the fragmented movement at a gathering in Cairo, the first time the Arab League has hosted such a meeting. He also said that a plan to transfer power in Syria, agreed by world leaders in Geneva at the weekend, fell short of Arab expectations. Syrian opposition groups have also rejected the plan saying it was ambiguous and a waste of time. The head of the UN's observer mission in Syria returned to Damascus from Geneva as government troops were reported to have stepped up their bombardment of opposition districts in the capital and elsewhere. Robert Mood's unarmed monitors are visiting hospitals. Their full mission was suspended last month because of risks posed by the escalating violence.
