Alcohol, Tobacco and Fuel Excise to Rise

Excise duties on alcohol, tobacco and petrol will rise under a proposal that the government adopted on Thursday as one of the measures to secure fresh tax revenue in the wake of the repealing of the real estate tax.

Excise on alcohol will rise by 10% effective when the government decree is published in the Official Gazette in the coming days, Finance Ministry State Secretary Mateja Vraničar said.

Excise will be EUR 12.1 per one percent volume of alcohol per hectolitre for beer, EUR 132 per hectolitre of intermediate-strength drinks such as wine, and EUR 1,320 per hectolitre of 100% ethanol for hard liquors.

Excise on tobacco will rise 5% on 1 May and excise on tobacco and natural gas will rise about 2%, a move that will be coupled with a discontinuation of special tax breaks for biofuels mixtures.

The government expects EUR 90m in additional tax revenue annually, which will go a long way towards offsetting the estimated EUR 180m that the budget lost when the Constitutional Court repealed the real estate tax.
