AKP seals historic third straight win in Turkey

It is the party's third consecutive win, which has not been seen in Turkish politics since the 1960s.

Even though it upped its share of the vote by some three percent, the AKP will actually finish with slightly fewer seats, thanks to its own electoral reforms.

"We are excited to gain one of every two votes in Turkey. We are excited to achieve a rare success in our democratic history by winning a mandate from our citizens for third term in office," said the AKP's leader and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

He may however be disappointed with the result, as the AKP misses out on the 330 seats it would have needed to press for constitutional reforms it wants without consulting the other parties in parliament, and will now have to seek a consensus before making any.
