A Warning from Brussels

Spokesman for the European Economic and Monetary Commissioner Olli Rehn, Amadeu Altafaj Tardio, said that the Commission "took notice of Sunday's referendum", but would not comment on the result itself, as it was a sovereign decision of the Slovenian nation.

Meanwhile, he stressed that given the long-term budgetary impact of ageing, which is "significantly higher than the EU average and with low employment rates for older workers, the problem...of the long term sustainability of Slovenia's pension system remains to be addressed".

The Commission can therefore only encourage the government to act resolutely to improve the long-term sustainability of the pension system, Altafaj Tardio said, proposing it could try by launching "effective incentives to raise the retirement age and accompany them by an appropriate active ageing strategy".
